We were approached by a reputable company to assist with a tender that they had received and were unable to assist due to company policy. It was from a "Zimbabwean mining company" that goes by the name of Mupawose Metal Resources, looking for a quotation on 3 specific items related to the mining industry. Mupawose Metal Resources supplied us with part numbers of the goods they needed. We Google'd these part numbers and one particular "supplier" that goes by the name of Bert Maybery & Sons popped up after searching each individual item. Going through their website, it looked legitimate. We requested prices on the requested items and within an hour we had a phone call from a "Travis Dlamini" : (+27 61 734 6139 Cell: +27 78 884 8167) and we received their quote shortly afterwards. We had requested prices from other suppliers, none of which were able to assist with the specified products, thus, we sent through our quotation based on the prices quoted from Bert Maybery & Sons.
Shortly after submitting our quote we had a call from a "Stanley Mandaza" (' +263 (7) 7801 9035 / ' +263 (73) 533 4940) The Group Operations Director from Mupawose Metal Resources in Zimbabwe. We were told that our prices were within their budget and that a Vendor form be completed in order for a purchase order to be drawn up after approval. Two days later we received Mupawose's purchase order. However, they insisted on meeting with our supplier in South Africa in order to view the goods for inspection prior to making payment. We agreed and placed our purchase order for one of each item with Bert Maybery & Sons
After lengthly negotiations, we agreed that we would take a sample of each to Zimbabwe for inspection and testing. Bert Maybery insisted that a deposit was needed to release the goods, prior to shipping the goods to our offices. So we paid via Credit Card through an eft transaction into an Absa Account and forwarded them the proof of payment. Bert Maybery promised to deliver by the Monday afternoon, but, since then have been unable to contact either them or the “clientâ€. Upon closer inspection of the emails from the two parties concerned, they were in fact identical in their layout, font etc.
We have contacted both our bank and Absa Bank advising of the fraudulent activity, and are awaiting an outcome on the matter. We have also enlisted the services of a private investigator and have a case with the SAPS.

A certain Mr. Gilbert Masendu is sending emails and requires quotations and proposals for supply of mining equipment (electrical) to a (Coal Mine) located in Zimbabwe. An individual from the procurement department will call saying he got your details from a mutual acquaintance and this will prove to be true. Brandon Peterson claims to work for the department of human settlements and has been let down for an urgent order as the previous supplier is unable to supply due to a lack of funds. Within an hour of quoting you will receive an order number and a vendor number. All is sent on official looking documents with a department stamp. The item is Deltec magnetic plated discs. Only a single company lists the items. A quotation and proforma invoice is received. If you insist on inspecting the items first, they will push for a deposit or else the item will be sold to someone else. The addresses listed in Cape Town are false and all of the land lines are diverted to cell phones. If you pay a deposit, it is all over. If you don't, the will start part 2, which is Brandon Peterson contacting you to say that another company also had an order, which Human Settlements cancelled but the goods were delivered. He will provide the name of the other person, who will try to the sell the items. The item does not exist. The photo of the item, the part number and the description on the webpage are false.

This man calls for a quote on a specific item (Bodenweiss Diamond Cutting Blade BW-0578-CB, (also used Holthausen tungsten drill bit BB6612ZK26 for another supplier)which is non-existent. When you google this, the only site which comes up is Mining Technology, where Andre Botha provides a quote for these, with prices for 25,50,100 (lower prices for higher quantity). Robert Nyoni sends a PO for 100, but states that he must examine the item before paying. Andre Botha at Mining Technology states that he can sell a minimum order quantity of 25, but will take back if packaging not damaged. Provides a credit application form, but first order must be cash while this is being processed. Websites for both supplier and buyer. So the sucker is caught!!! Robert Nyoni sends an email with SAA flight details for his visit to SA to inspect the goods, but obviously never arrives.
