| Anonymous Excelsior, MN, United States 2014-07-30 21:01:08 Classified Ads Scam Autotrader (autotrader.com) | +8 AutoTrader.com car purchase scam - Sherry Clark I placed an ad online at Auto Trader and was contacted by Sherry Clark as being interested in purchasing my car. She used this common email address after texting me from 512-548-7223 stating she could not call because she was at work. In the email, it details how she wants to pay via PayPal because it is secure and easy. She would have someone come and pick up the car when it clears my account, as she is stationed in the Persian Gulf and is buying it for her son in TX as a gift.
After speaking with Auto trader and PayPal, I determined it was a scam. PayPal does not offer purchase or selling protection on items that are picked up (only on shipped items). This red flag convinced me that it was a scam, as they could have the money put in my account and afterward PayPal
could take it back after finding out the funds were fraudulent leaving me with no car or money.

I placed an ad on Autotrader and was contacted not even 48 hours later by Sherry Croft. She sent me a text message and gave me an email address to reach her at. I emailed her and she later emailed me back and told me she is in the military and a widow, and would pay the listed price for my car, but first I need to setup a paypal account.
This is a duckin scam.

I am glad I saw this. I just got the same text message asking if this was still available. Should I just tell her only if I can pay through paypal before telling them to go f*** themselves?

Same as other people's experience; posted a vehicle on AutoTrader, within an hour got a text saying she couldn't talk because she was at work, asked to email instead, says she is a 'widow' working for the Coast Guard in the 'northern persian gulf' and was buying it for her son. Tried to use same PayPal story. Immediately willing to pay asking price w/o any real interest in the condition of the vehicle.
Thanks very much for posting to this site.

Thanks to the above/other report on sherry croft or Clark I was able to discern that her offer for my car was also fraudulent. She claims to be a US Coast Guard and unable to take personal calls due to this and being a widow (?!?). Apparently, she claim she is buying the car for her son in TX and will pay the asking price as long as I set up a paypal account. This woman is obv running a scam! So beware of any Sherry C's.
