Gumtree |  +6 Gumtree Advert - Scam Response from NZ Oil and Gas I placed an advert on Gumtree.
Soon after I received a text message from the phone number 0409 793 748, requesting me to email them back regarding the furniture I had online.
I did so and asked some questions, I then received this response;
"Thanks a lot for the email. I am away at sea at the moment,i work with New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) and we are presently offshore in New Zealand Taranaki Basin on kapo project. We do not have access to phone at the moment,its 5days off and 25days on,which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility. Where is it located at the moment?
I am buying it for my for my holiday and i want it delivered before my arrival.I won't be able to come for the inspection due to the nature of my work and i would have called but our calling is restricted.Regarding the payment,pls get back to me with your final asking price and your paypal details so i can process the payment,you can alternatively send your bsb and acct number if you have no paypal acct.I have also contacted my courier who will come for pick up after the whole fund has been cleared into your acct.
Await your reply."
He did not respond with any answers to my questions and his ability to organise a courier as quickly as he suggested set off red flags. I investigated the NZ Oil and Gas website where they had a page on scams that were going around falsely using their company as an employer. |

Published one item of furniture on gumtree, a few hours later received the following message: 'Is the Gumtree Furniture Items still available for sale? kindly reply to (kokomaster1013@yahoo.com) plz no text.'
Did a quick google and came across this forum! Thought it all seemed a bit funky, just wanted to say that the scam is still circulating!

Same old story. Received a text message asking me to give the details of the sale item via email. Name of the scammer is Kathy Smith, email was kokomaster1013@yahoo.com.
Once details were given, she asked me for my paypal/bank account details and that a courier is also arranged. Seriously, no way to use a phone but can arrange a courier that quick? Asked me to help her pay for the moneygram amount to the courier, told her "nice try"!!

SECOND EMAIL::
Thanks for the payment details and am happy to proceed with the
payment, however i just got a confirmation mail from the shipping
agent now that i will need to pay for the freighting fees before they
can schedule pre-shipping/ pickup date,they charged $950 for the
pick up and delivery, but the problem is they only accept Moneygram
money transfer as form of payment which is sent to their HQ in the
USA.
I need a credit card to personally take care of that but I didn't
bring it along as I am currently on duty and had thought there would
be no need for bringing it along.
As you are well aware of, due to the nature of my work am away and do
not have access to Moneygram, most seven eleven outlet or store have
Moneygram section, will it be ok with you if I add the $950 to the
amount I am transferring? and you can help me make the Moneygram
transfer of the freighting fees through Moneygram money transfer?
You are not obliged to help me, but i will indeed appreciate
your help as I am a little incapacitated here

I advertised furniture on Gumtree and I received a text message first asking for my email address. Then I received the email from this "David Green" wanting to buy everything. Thought it was too good to be true so did a google search on this guy and thanks to Scamalot found the same scam email from other people.

A Gumtree scammed that Word for word said as per the scam above relating to working for NZ oil and gas company and wanted the furniture that I had advertised. After probing further they would not tell me the name of the courier collecting the items nor did they use correct English. They also said they wanted all the furniture and I trapped them basking if they wanted an item that was never advertised and they wanted it. So it pays to question carefully.

I also placed items on Gumtree and soon received the following txt
"do you still have the gumtree furniture? kindly reply to dorom088@gmail.com
pls no text"
I did a Google search on the email address and came up with the information on Scamdex that showed other people had received a txt which was identical to what i had received.

Advertised some furniture on Gumtree - multiple adverts. Received a text from 0409793748 saying 'Do you still have the Gumtree furniture? kindly reply to dorom088@gmail.com plz no text.
Sent an email asking which ad he was interested and received the below email from golemetz2003@gmail.com which wasn't the email I originally sent it to.
Google searched as it seemed off to find all the info of his history of scamming and sent it back to him and said 'nice try'.
