I was on a Christian dating app called cross paths. It is a free site that requires FB login to use it. I met a guy named Oliver Figueroa who claimed to be a U.S. Military soldier. Within a day of knowing each other, he claimed he loved me, and wanted me to send him an iTunes gift card. Those were red flags for me so I started doing some investigating. I found out that fake soldier romance scams existed. He started saying all the things that fake soldiers say. When I asked him to video chat he said it wasn't allowed on base, and when I asked for a military email address he said it was too soon to give it. When I said I would never send him any money because real soldiers have money. They don't need to ask for any. He said that he didn't have access to it. He also said he was on a top-secret mission. He wouldn't even give me the name to his base. His grammar was always poor when we text. When I did talk to him on the phone he had an accent. Yet he claimed he was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He also said that both his parents died in an accident. He said his wife cheated on him with his best friend. Everything confirmed that he was a scammer. I blocked him and deleted the app I used to text him. I also contact fakewarriors.org. I gave them the name, and info he gave me. They confirmed that there was no soldier with that name and DOB listed in the army. They also confirmed that the pictures he sent were stolen. I never gave the scammer any money or gave him personal details such as address or last name. I just wanted to let others know so they can avoid the same situation.
Follow Ups/Extra Information. Most recent is listed first.
Met “Oliver” on the Hinge app and started talking on What’s App - story from the previous person matches almost exactly except he didn’t tell me what happened in his past relationship and didn’t ask me for anything. When I showed him the report I found he said it was someone else he has been impersonating him. I blocked him and reported him to What’s App and included the number he was using
