I am selling my car on Australian Car Sale website www.carsguide.com.au. Received enquiry from David (by system generated text, as the website dictates) to email him details. Did so, thinking the enquiry was genuine.

His reply was as follows (very similar to scam listed on the carsguide website under safe buying):
\"Thanks for the response,I would have loved to call you directly but due to the nature of my work we do not have access to phone at the moment, which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility.

I am buying this for my first son who just graduated on top of his class at Charles Darwin University in NT ,He studied Building Design & Architecture. I want it to be the perfect graduation gift for him and am making it a surprise package ,Does it have any history I should be aware of? and why are you selling if you don\'t mind my asking.I am already in talks with freighters that will handle the pickup and delivery .I will really appreciate if you can email more info

Due to the nature of my work i am a very busy man working all day,am a sailor am presently on-board, i don\'t have access to my bank account online as am not with my credit card details here but i have my ANZ bank account link up with my PayPal account so I will be paying you through PayPal to your nominated bank account or better still is if you have a PayPal account ,please get back to me with your BSB and account details or PayPal account so i can proceed with the payment and contact the courier agent who will come to pick it up and deliver it in NT for my son .Await your reply .

Regards

I responded with details, and offered to have the car inspected on his behalf so he had third party approval in order to identify whether the enquiry was genuine and ask when he wanted to have the car picked up (again, spam checking). His reply:

\"Hi,

Am sorry for the late responce is due to the nature of my job. Thanks for the mail,i appreciate your honesty with the detailed explanation with regards to your words on the car status,am really satisfied and i also appreciate your honesty about the condition of the car as that is what i really need most as wont be able to come for inspection as am on-board.

Happy to inform you that the fund is ready and available in my PayPal account so am ready to transfer the fund as soon as you get back to me with your payment details.Waiting to read from you ASAP.

Regards,
David.\"

Having still not determined to my satisfaction that his enquiry was a scam, I asked for the details required on a notice of disposal form with for me to sign my car over at a registry office. \"David\" \'s response contained a licence number, which I called the registry to check up on and did not exist. Funnily enough, it did come up on this website though.

\"Here is the details needed .my son details
Luke Patrick
36 koolpinyah crescent tiwi northern territory 0810,Australia
lisence number - 16723654
DOB- 29th oct,1995.

Regards,
David.\"

As much as he seemed to be in a rush, and the english is not good in the emails, this did seem as though it could be legitimate. Thank goodness for sites like this one! :)
