I was looking for a rental in Rockaway, Queens. I responded to a Craigslist ad (which he later removed) for a 1 bedroom at $900/month. For that area the price isn't unbelievable. They probably have among the cheapest rents in Queens because they're so far out and they're still recovering from Sandy. The exact email response I received was:

I was never wondering why the rent was low. I've never come across a Landlord who offered an explanation for why they're renting. Not to be rude but as soon as I read "West Africa," I knew he was full of it. So I googled the unusual contact number and came across results for multiple scams using the number where, as with this case, the scammer wanted money to be sent. I'm not sending any money for a rental I can't see , nor filling out personal information for someone I haven't even met. I hope this is helpful for SOMEONE.
Scam EmailThankfully I was smart enough to recognize this for what it was.
His email was Daniel.greg35@yahoo.com.
