Below is an email I got from Kathy Smith about something I had for sale on Gumtree. Thanks to this site I was made aware that she, him, it, is a scammer. Unfortunately too many people are being scammed by lowlifes like this.

I am away at sea at the moment,i work with New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) and we are presently offshore in New Zealand Taranaki Basin on kapo project. We do not have access to phone at the moment,its 5days off and 25days on,which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility. Where is it located at the moment?
I am buying it for my for my holiday and i want it delivered before my arrival.I won't be able to come for the inspection due to the nature of my work and i would have called but our calling is restricted.Regarding the payment,pls get back to me with your final asking price and your paypal details so i can process the payment,you can alternatively send your bsb and acct number if you have no paypal acct.I have also contacted my courier who will come for pick up after the whole fund has been cleared into your acct.

I advertised furniture on gumtree and was contacted by this person. She asked for my email address as her gumtree messages were full. After checking that I was genuinely selling the items, she emailed me stating that she worked on an oil rig in NZ and couldn’t contact me directly, but she would be sending a courier to collect the furniture, once I had given my bank details (for transfer of funds) and or PayPal details. For whatever reason I checked the company she supposedly worked for online, and was met with the scam details. Thankfully, the transaction never took place, and I didn’t give out any information.

I had an add on gumtree, selling our furniture as we are moving house within 2 days,not a text message saying that she is interested to buy, however (with reasons somehow made me believe it is legit) she then asked me to if I could transfer money to an agent name Sabrina Heaton ( which is the said courier ) and she will deposit the payment to my account together with the payment for the item I was selling. I didn't acknowledge, afterwards got an email from service@paypal.com.au saying that an amount was deposited to my account however is on hold until I pay the said agent as they said as protection of both buyer and the seller, and that I would be banned from PayPal if I don't comply as it is by law. Thought its legit as it is from service@paypal.com.au already, so I did comply. After they got the money, never heard from them again even if I tried so many times, lost $760, our last money in the bank. Never thought that there are people like these who would do such things to people like me who are not well off and just trying to sell stuff just to get by. Be extra careful everyone.
