Not sure exactly how the scam works but anything offshore and they can't come in person is a scam.
They probably take the goods and claw the money back somehow....

to me
Thanks a lot for the email. I am away at sea at the moment, I work with New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) and we are presently offshore in New Zealand Taranaki Basin on kapok project. We do not have access to phone at the moment, its 5days off and 25days on, which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility. Where is it located at the moment?
I am buying it i want it delivered before my arrival. I won't be able to come for the inspection due to the nature of my work and i would have called but our calling is restricted. Regarding the payment, pls get back to me with your final asking price and your PayPal details so i can process the payment you can easily log on to www.paypal.com and register an account with them if you don't have, or you can alternatively send your bsb and acct number if you have no PayPal acct so i can easily transfer from my paypal account to your bank details from my PayPal which is PayPal to bank transfer ok.I have also contacted my courier who will come for pick up after the whole fund has been cleared into your acct.
Await your reply.
This is the exact same email as received by another potential victim. I was suspicious and found him listed on this website. He will not get a reply.

A potential buyer was interested in purchasing one of my items on Gumtree back on 17 September 2019 as he goes by the name of Dan.
Sent this message "Hi, I’m interested, ,.provid your EMAIL ,,,for CONTACT
THANK,,,,,,, "
I gave my email and goes by the name of Jacob Lawson and said he worked for New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) and was going to organise his own courier to pick up the item.
I received an email from Paypal as it was sent into my inbox and were demanding me to pay $1000.00 as the funds supposedly paid by the buyer were on hold until I paid this amount.
I was emailed the Commonwealth bank details of his agent as I thought this guy was legit so I paid.
Then I received another email from Paypal as they explained they had received the $1000.00 and then they were asking for a further $2200.00 to be paid via Western Union for some insurance and security protection between buyer and seller.
Silly me I reluctantly paid this to the requested agent in Deli, India as the consultant at Western Union did warn me there were many scams happening in India. I should have told him to cancel the payment there and then.
Once this was paid I received yet another Paypal email asking me to pay a further $$3,600.00 via Transferwise.
When I read this I knew then this was a scam as they will keep scamming me, therefore I draw the line as I knew I would not see the $3200.00 returned to my Paypal account.
I've been trading online with sites such as ebay, Gumtree, Facebook marketplace etc for almost 20 years as I've never been scammed. I thought this guy was genuine and legit.
I've heard of buyers becoming scammed but not sellers as it's a terrible experience.
I realize I won't see the money again as I wanted to report this here so it doesn't happen to anyone else.
If you sell on Gumtree and anyone requests for your email just tell them to get lost or ignore the email. If any genuine buyer is interested in your items they will consult and negotiate with you via the Gumtree site as it always gets monitored.
Scam Email1st email I received from this Jacob Lawson.
